Springtime Project: Upgrading My Backyard Trials Area
With winter here, I’m already thinking about upgrades to my backyard bike trials area for the coming spring.

I love riding trials so much that it’s hard to stop once I start. I was able to pull off some pretty cool lines until I literally just could not ride anymore.
Despite the forecast for rain, I needed to get out on my trials bike. The slots in the pallets messed with me in multiple ways. The slippery wood didn’t help.
We got some snow this week making our usual spots unrideable. So we went to Tony’s place to ride on sketchy wooden features in the parking lot.
We’ve been remodeling our kitchen, so I haven’t ridden much lately. Despite having the builders working in the house, I needed to get on my bike and ride.
Using the main posts from my son’s old playscape and some other scraps of wood, I built a set of skinny beams, that I just needed to ride.
Small rocks, particularly ones with varied surfaces, provide great low-consequence bike control practice. They provide a great challenge for rear wheel moves.
After a couple weeks being off the bike due to work schedules and illness, I was finally able to get back on my trials bike for a short session in the driveway.
I just got a new trials bike! This is my first ride and my initial impressions. This 26-inch bike definitely feels different from my other 24-inch bikes.
I was taking it pretty easy. I started slow, but was actually doing some halfway decent lines. Until a brutal shin dig sent me to the emergency room!
